Upgrade VMware vCenter from 5.1 to 6.0


VMware vSphere 5.0 and 5.1 will go to End of General Support in August 2016!
New version 6.0 is really faster compared to 5.1, but also with 5.5

Before upgrade please check the VMware HCL compatibility list and take current environment back up/snapshot (Including database and SSL certificate)

Upgrade Matrix
In-place upgrade supports vCenter 4.x, 5.0.x, 5.1.x, and 5.5
vCenter Server 6.0 can manage ESX/ESXi 5.x and higher hosts
vCenter OS Support: Only supports Windows Server 2008 SP2 and later (including Windows 2012 R2)
Double check that your servers are compatible with version 6
Double check compatibility with 3rd party software

Below are the procedure for the upgrade, straight forward

Provide vCenter server administrator/service account credentials

New SSL certificate will generate automatically, click OK

vCenter Server 5.5 single sign-on “System-Domain” will be migrated to new single Sign-on domain. Default will be vsphere.local, provide a password and click next

 Minimum free space required would be 9 GB

 Click Upgrade, upgrade process will take at-least 15 minutes, it depends on your environment

 Click Launch vSphere web client and  login using SSO/user credentials –
